About Our Hometown Anthropologists

Reel Insights’ Hometown Anthropologists most valuable asset is their curious mind. Then, a video camera. HA’s use these tools in homes, workplaces, schools, shopping areas, public parks and streets – anywhere they feel they can discover what makes people tick.

Our “HA’s” observe and record moments that demonstrate how individuals, families or work groups make decisions or express their values and behaviors. Then they ask questions, some of their own, and the questionnaire we supply in this document.

Our best HA’s:

  • Show usually-hidden moments: when values are expressed, real behavior emerges and decisions are made.
  • Find the emotion in any situation.
  • Tell an authentic story (without narration) about the theme. The story line usually runs like this: here’s a situation someone faces (a purchase decision, a lifestyle choice, etc.). Here’s the choice they made. And here’s why: values, circumstances, experience.
  • Show much more than tell. Show the family eating pasta, show the kids reaction (“again!?”) rather than simply showing the subject sitting on a couch saying “I used to serve steak, now it’s pasta every night.”

Do you have what it takes? If so, we look forward to seeing your video!

We are developing a list of “Official Hometown Anthropologists,” who will be made aware of other, unpublished opportunities with Reel Insights (contests or potential paid engagements). The quality of the work submitted determines eligibility. If selected, instructions will be sent to you about how to proceed.
